The Detroit Red Wings played a similar game Saturday to ones they've played over the last week — except they didn't win this one.

Buffalo's Bowen Byram scored late in the second period snapping a tie, and the Sabres' Jack Quinn scored an empty-net goal, giving the Sabres a 5-3 victory.

Quinn's goal came moments after Patrick Kane's shot hit a goalpost on the other end.

The Wings (4-4-0) saw their three-game win streak come to an end, while Buffalo (4-4-1) won its third straight game.

"We would have liked to have some bounces, but at the same time we didn't quite reach our level today and maybe we didn't earn those bounces," winger Lucas Raymond said on FanDuel Sports Network.

With the Wings shorthanded, Raymond tied the game 3-3 with his first goal of the season at 11:02 of the second period.

Raymond intercepted a mishandled pass between Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin, skated down ice and ripped a shot past goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for his first career shorthanded goal.

But the Sabres answered at 15:54, off a faceoff victory, as Byram's shot from the point bounced off defenseman Jeff Petry and into the net.

"That's why you go to the net," said coach Derek Lalonde, of Byram's goal. "We had chances, we a couple of posts, but you create your own puck luck. On their game-winning goal, they created the puck luck.

"We didn't execute today, that was the difference."

The Sabres outshot the Wings, 39-25, as the Wings continued a disturbing trend of getting outshot by a sizeable portion.

Alex DeBrincat and Michael Rasmussen added the Wings' goals, while Moritz Seider had two assists.

Thompson, quickly becoming a Red Wings' thorn, scored two goals and Jason Zucker (power play) added Buffalo goals. Thompson has eight goals and 18 points in 10 games against the Wings.

The Sabres were 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Wings were goal-less in two attempts.

Buffalo opened the game's scoring with Zucker scoring his first goal, and Buffalo's first power-play goal this season in the 23rd attempt. Zucker put back a rebound of Thompson's shot past Lyon at 4:04.

Thompson made it 2-0 at 12:00, converting J.J. Peterka's while the Wings were scrambling after a bad line change.

DeBrincat sliced the lead with a key goal later in the period. DeBrincat found himself open in the slot, with a nice give-and-go feed from Seider, and snapped a shot past Luukkonen.

"They came out real hard, they took charge early," Raymond said. "Toward the end of the second (period) we started to take over with more zone time and more looks. We want to have better starts and get off on the right foot."

The Wings host Edmonton on Sunday at Little Caesars Arena (6 p.m. ET).
