SEATTLE — Hurricanes 4, Kraken 1 at Climate Pledge Arena

Notable: Seattle Kraken coach Dan Bylsma warned how the Hurricanes pressure all over ice with the goal being to cause mistakes by their opponents.

While most of Seattle’s mistakes weren’t glaring, the ice was clearly tilted in the Hurricanes favor all night and even the best efforts of Kraken goalie Joey Daccord couldn’t keep Carolina from handing Seattle (4-4-1) a third straight loss.

Andrei Svechnikov scored on a power play in the first period and Jack Drury finished off a 2-on-1 late in the second period when several Kraken players were stuck on the ice with an extremely long shift because of the Hurricanes pressure.

The Kraken had a great chance in the closing seconds of the second period when Jared McCann skated free on a short-handed breakaway, only to have his shot stopped by Carolina goalie Frederik Andersen.

McCann got the best of Andersen with 9:39 left on another breakaway when the Kraken final broke the Hurricanes pressure and McCann scored his fifth of the season. McCann has a point in six straight games. Eeli Tolvanen had another great chance about a minute later, but the puck rolled off his stick.

That was the last good chance for the Kraken. Seth Jarvis on a breakaway and Dmitry Orlov into an empty-net both scored in the final five minutes.

Andersen faced just 19 shots, while Daccord was peppered by chances all night. Daccord finished with 36 saves. Daccord started his second straight game, marking the first time this season Seattle has gone with the same goalie in consecutive games.

The setback was a deflating conclusion to the five-game homestand where the Kraken came away with just five points.

Goal of the game: McCann made a terrific move to the backhand and flipped the puck under the crossbar. Matty Beniers made an excellent stretch pass to spring McCann free, his second straight game with an assist.

Star of the game: Daccord was really good considering the constant pressure. Special commendation to Jamie Oleksiak who stayed on the ice for a lengthy shift in the second period with one good leg after getting hit on the inside of his left knee by a shot. Oleksiak left the bench for a big chunk of the period but returned late in the second.

On tap: The Kraken open a five-game road trip Tuesday night beginning in eastern Canada against Montreal. Seattle also visits Toronto, Ottawa, Boston and Colorado on the trip.
