PITTSBURGH — The Steelers have addressed depth in a few key areas ahead of Tuesday's 4 p.m. NFL trade deadline.

First, they acquired wide receiver Mike Williams in a trade with the New York Jets that gives them another receiver to pair with George Pickens. Then they shipped a seventh-round pick to Green Bay for edge rusher Preston Smith, according to multiple reports.

To get Williams, whom they attempted to sign earlier this year in free agency, the Steelers gave the Jets a fifth-round draft choice in 2025.

Williams (6-foot-4, 218 pounds) has averaged 40 catches and 622 yards and four touchdowns in eight NFL seasons, seven of which were spent with the Chargers. Williams' best season came in 2021, when he had 76 catches for 1,146 yards and nine touchdowns.

Williams signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Jets in free agency just days before he was scheduled to meet with the Steelers. But after the Jets acquired Davante Adams in a trade, Williams became expendable. He had just 12 catches for 166 yards and no touchdowns in nine games.

Before the trade was made, coach Mike Tomlin was asked about the quality of his wide receiver group and the possibility of giving quarterback Russell Wilson another target.

"I don't know that his presence or lack of his presence changes our appetite for adding talent, talent that could help us win, not only at that position, but any," Tomlin said. "I just think that's always our mentality, particularly talent and value."

Smith (6-5, 265 pounds) has had at least eight sacks the past three seasons and has added 2.5 so far in 2024. A second-round pick in 2015, Smith really burst onto the scene in 2019, when he had 12 sacks.

Smith, who will turn 32 in a couple of weeks, has two years remaining on his contract. He spent his first four seasons with the Commanders and had been with the Packers since 2019.

Smith has been one of the league's most durable edge rushers since he entered the league. He has played in 155 games in his career and has 138 starts.

The Steelers had been looking to bolster their front seven, which took a hit earlier this season when DeMarvin Leal injured his neck and went on injured reserve. In their most recent games against the Giants, the Steelers gave up a season-high 157 rushing yards.

Smith likely will jump into the rotation and give the Steelers another pass-rushing option alongside top reserve Nick Herbig, who has missed the past three games with a hamstring injury.

The Steelers play the Washington Commanders on Sunday.
