NFL Trade Deadline: Commanders acquire Marshon Lattimore, Cowboys add young WR
Published in Football
NEW YORK — Many of this NFL season’s high-profile transactions occurred well before Tuesday afternoon’s trade deadline.
The Buffalo Bills acquired wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 15.
That same day, the Jets added fellow wideout Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders, making Mike Williams expendable before his trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday.
On Oct. 23, the Kansas City Chiefs got DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans — a trade that paid off handsomely with the receiver’s two-touchdown performance on Monday night.
And last week, the Baltimore Ravens added target machine Diontae Johnson to their already explosive offensive.
But the wheeling and dealing did not stop there.
Buyers and sellers remained busy in the hours leading up to Tuesday’s 4 p.m. cutoff, with contenders hoping to add a missing piece before the stretch run.
Here are notable deals from deadline day:
Washington Commanders acquire cornerback Marshon Lattimore from New Orleans Saints
Washington doubled down on its surprising 7-2 start by adding Lattimore, a four-time Pro Bowler.
Lattimore, 28, fills the NFC East-leading Commanders’ biggest hole, giving them a lockdown cornerback in a division featuring star receivers in the New York Giants’ Malik Nabers, the Dallas Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb and the Philadelphia Eagles’ A.J. Brown.
The Commanders’ first-round pick last year, Emmanuel Forbes, has fallen out of their cornerback rotation. Washington has been operating with second-round rookie Mike Sainristil on the outside, but adding Lattimore should shift the 5-10 Sainristil to his more ideal position in the slot.
It didn’t come cheaply, as Washington is sending third, fourth and sixth-round picks in 2025 to the Saints for Lattimore and a fifth-rounder.
Detroit Lions acquire pass rusher Za’Darius Smith from Browns
Few players match the do-it-all productivity of the Lions’ Aidan Hutchinson, who had 7.5 sacks in five games before suffering a season-ending broken leg.
But Smith should at least help the void.
The veteran defensive end, 32, has five sacks in nine games this season. He boasts three seasons with double-digit sacks since 2019, earning Pro Bowl honors each time.
Detroit, which leads the NFC with a 7-1 record, is sending a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round selection to Cleveland for Smith and a 2026 seventh-rounder.
Cowboys acquire wide receiver Jonathan Mingo from Carolina Panthers
It’s been only a year and a half since the Panthers used the 39th overall pick to select Mingo, a big-bodied receiver with 4.46 speed, out of Ole Miss.
But on Tuesday, the Cowboys made a generous offer, shipping a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Panthers for Mingo and a 2025 seventh-rounder.
Mingo, 23, has 55 receptions and 539 yards without a touchdown in 24 NFL games. He remains on his rookie contract through the 2026 season.
It was a steep price considering the Bills traded a third-rounder to acquire Cooper, a five-time Pro Bowl selection. When the Cowboys traded Cooper to the Browns before the 2022 season, all they got back was a fifth-round pick and a sixth-round swap.
The 3-5 Cowboys hope Mingo can help bolster a wide receiver group that has lacked consistent production opposite Lamb since that Cooper trade.
Mingo will start his Cowboys career receiving targets from Cooper Rush until starting quarterback Dak Prescott can return from a hamstring injury.
Cincinnati Bengals acquire running back Khalil Herbert from Chicago Bears
In the wake of Zack Moss (neck) being deemed out indefinitely, the Bengals added a veteran reinforcement at running back.
Still only 24, Herbert surpassed 600 rushing yards in both of the past two seasons and has averaged 4.8 yards per carry in his career, but he fell to third on the Bears’ depth chart this season behind D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson.
Herbert figures to assume backup duties in Cincinnati behind Chase Brown, who just totaled 157 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s win over the Raiders.
Adding Herbert cost the Bengals their 2025 seventh-round pick.
