Inter Miami trades Leo Campana to New England Revolution for record $2.5 million fee

MIAMI — Inter Miami will be missing one of its fan favorites when the 2025 season kicks off, as the club announced on Thursday that it traded forward Leo Campana to the New England Revolution, acquiring an MLS domestic trade fee record of $2.5 in General Allocation Money.
The fee will be split between 2025 and 2026, with the club receiving $2 million in 2025 and $500,000 in 2026. Miami also acquires a 2025 international roster slot and a 2026 international roster slot. Inter Miami will retain a sell-on percentage of any future sale of the forward and could receive up to $750,000 in GAM should Campana meet certain performance-based incentives.
“Leo has been an important player for Inter Miami over the past three years. His contributions in attack were key throughout a historic period in which we clinched our first two titles. We are thankful for his contributions in a crucial time of growth for our Club and wish him the best in the future,” President of Football Operations Raúl Sanllehí said. “The General Allocation Money will allow us to continue to strengthen our roster for the 2025 season.”
According to a source familiar with the trade, Miami did not want to lose Campana but agreed to the trade to comply with the league’s strict roster rules. Campana earned $600,000 base salary in 2024 with guaranteed compensation of $722,333, according to the MLSPA salary guide.
The 24-year-old Ecuadorean forward had been in the club’s long-range plans and was signed through the 2027 season with an option for 2028. His roster designation was TAM player, so he was not occupying one of the three Designated Player spots.
Campana signed with Inter Miami ahead of the 2022 season and went on to become one of just three players in club history to reach the 100 appearance milestone. He scored 32 goals and had 10 assists in 100 appearances across all competitions, which ranked second in club history despite having to share time with Gonzalo Higuain, Josef Martinez and Luis Suarez over his Miami career.
He helped Inter Miami win its first two titles, the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. He recorded eight goals and three assists in 30 games this season.
Campana’s game-clinching goal on the road at Toronto in the 94th minute on Oct. 6 was critical in the team’s race for the Supporters’ Shield. Lionel Messi, Suarez and Sergio Busquets did not start that game and came in during the second half.
Campana wore the captain’s armband and had been in a good run of form, scoring three goals and getting the call-up from Ecuador for a pair of World Cup qualifiers.
“We saw Leo playing well, motivated, very happy with his selection to the national team,” coach Tata Martino said at the time. “We preferred to leave him on the field when Leo and Luis came in. It is rare that three can play together, but since a loss or a tie was the same for us, and we were going only for a victory, we left in three forwards and got the prize in the end.”
