Red Wings ride third-period rally, goalie Alex Lyon past Predators

The Detroit Red Wings placed a lot of emphasis on these first five games of the season.

It hasn't been a perfect start, but thank goodness for playing the Nashville Predators during that span.

The Wings earned their second win Saturday in the five games — both against Nashville — with a 5-2 road victory over the Predators.

These were two desperate teams in Nashville, both searching for something positive. The Wings raised their record to 2-3-0 while the Predators remain winless at 0-5-0.

Andrew Copp's goal at 3 minutes, 29 seconds of the third period broke a 2-2 tie. Simon Edvinsson and Copp then added empty-net goals to seal the victory.

Goaltender Alex Lyon stopped 37 shots and was arguably the Wings' star in this game. Lyon made several key stops with the game still in the balance.

Steven Stamkos scored his first goal with the Predators and tied the game at 2 just 32 seconds into the third period. Stamkos was robbed by Lyon in the waning seconds of the second period on a two-man Nashville advantage but made no mistake one-timing a pass.

The Wings answered, though, as Joe Veleno put a shot on net and the puck bounded off Copp's skate and past goaltender Juuse Saros.

Dylan Larkin gave the Wings a 2-1 lead early in the second period. Larkin scored his third goal, banging a rebound of Alex DeBrincat's shot past Saros at the 3:17 mark.

Vladimir Tarasenko and Nashville's Luke Schenn traded first-period goals.

Schenn, playing in his 1,000th NHL game, scored on a deflected shot past Lyon at the 8:48 mark. But the Wings tied it on Tarasenko's goal, a quick one-timer past Saros at the 13:26 mark from Jonatan Berggren. Marco Kasper, recalled Friday from Grand Rapids, also earned an assist for his first NHL point.

The Wings' video coaches came through with a huge play of their own shortly after Nashville's first goal, correctly noticing a Predators offside on an apparent goal that would have put the Wings in a 2-0 deficit.

The Wings next head to Long Island, where they'll face the New York Islanders on Tuesday.
