After suffering a hamstring injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, quarterback Dak Prescott is expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks, according to a team source.

A stint on the injured reserve is being discussed for Prescott, but that decision will come after he gets a second opinion on the injury.

“This week, we’re certainly going through all of the steps of evaluating Dak,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said on Monday on 105.3 The Fan. “We’ll certainly make a solid decision based on what comes back.”

Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb battled through an AC joint injury in his right shoulder against the Falcons and will be week-to-week as he works through what is being described as a minor issue at this point. The expectation is that he could play against Philadelphia on Sunday, but he would need to have a positive week of rehab and log at least one full practice by Saturday.

When they take the field against the Eagles on Sunday, it will be the first time the Cowboys have been without Prescott since he suffered a calf injury in 2022 and missed four games. Cooper Rush filled in for Prescott and went 4-1 to keep Dallas’ season afloat. Rush and Trey Lance are both expected to see an opportunity in the coming weeks in place of the injured Prescott.

“Certainly, I thought Cooper did a great job stepping in yesterday, which he’s done before at a high level,” Stephen Jones said. “Obviously, these guys have a lot of confidence in Cooper. But at the same time, we know we got a young quarterback in Trey that did some good things in the preseason. We feel good that we got two good backup quarterbacks.”

In replacement of Prescott on Sunday against Atlanta, Rush completed 13 of his 25 passing attempts for 115 yards and one touchdown in one quarter of action.

“You’ve got to give Rush a little positive here,” owner Jerry Jones said postgame. “He came in there and I’m proud of him. I thought he played well.”

The Cowboys are 3-5 and rapidly falling out of playoff contention. The Washington Commanders (7-2) lead the NFC East standings.
