DETROIT — Following reports that Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has a warrant request for a charge of carrying a concealed weapon, the NFL on Tuesday released a statement.

"The Lions promptly notified the league upon learning of the matter. We have no further comment at this time," the statement read.

According to WXYZ-TV, Williams was briefly detained and then released by Detroit police officers following an alleged traffic stop for speeding on Oct. 8 near the corner of Conner and Jefferson. The police department has since launched an investigation regarding why Williams was released and has submitted a warrant request to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office.

The WXYZ-TV report states Williams, 23, was riding in the passenger seat of a car driven by his brother when officers pulled the car over for speeding. Wiliams' brother, the driver, immediately disclosed to the officers that there were two guns in the car, one registered to each brother, the report said.

A problem reportedly arose because Williams did not have a concealed pistol license and was improperly storing his weapon underneath the passenger seat. Williams' brother, however, did have a CPL. Williams was detained at the scene before being released, the report said.

The Lions released a statement on Tuesday that read: "Jameson made us aware immediately that he was a passenger in a routine traffic stop on October 8th. We discussed the incident with him and have kept the league informed of what we know. We understand he was released without incident or citation. It is now our understanding that the Detroit Police Department is revisiting the matter. Jameson has hired an attorney, and we will not be commenting further out of respect for the legal process."

Williams, selected No. 12 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, has 17 catches for 361 yards (21.2 yards per catch) and three touchdowns in six games this season. Williams is serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's Performance Enhancing Substances policy, and missed Sunday's 52-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
