NEW YORK — The Jets have released cornerback Tae Hayes, who was arrested in Alabama over the weekend for marijuana possession.

The team confirmed his release on Monday afternoon with an online post that did not go into specifics.

Hayes, 26, was booked at 3:46 a.m. Sunday and released at 5:07 a.m. on a $300 bond, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office’s online records.

He was arrested by the Trinity Police Department for second-degree possession of marijuana, according to the records. Marijuana is not decriminalized in Alabama outside of medical use.

Hayes is from nearby Decatur, Ala.

The Jets signed Hayes to their practice squad on Oct. 3 and activated him for one game last season — an Oct. 15 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Hayes had two tackles in the 20-14 victory. The Jets re-signed Hayes to a futures contract in January.

Hayes has appeared in 14 games over parts of four NFL seasons with six teams, recording 18 tackles, two passes defended and a fumble recovery.

He played college football at Appalachian State before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Hayes has also played for the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots.
