ANAHEIM, Calif. — There have been outings this season when Reese Olson has impressed by the way he dominated the opposing lineup. His eight innings of three-hit shutout ball against the Miami Marlins comes to mind.

But on Saturday night, the Detroit Tigers right-hander impressed with his fortitude and his fight level.

He stayed mostly impervious to the considerable stress and pressure the Angels put on him for six innings and he left the game with his team up 5-2.

His efforts went for naught. The Angels rallied against the Tigers bullpen and in the 10th inning Kevin Pillar ripped a walk-off single to beat the Tigers 6-5. It was the Tigers' fourth straight loss.

They scored two runs off reliever Beau Brieske in the seventh inning and then catcher Logan O’Hoppe, whose three-run homer beat the Tigers Friday night, hit the first pitch Will Vest threw in the eighth, a slider that caught too much of the plate, and tied the score with a bullet homer to left-center.

Olson, as he has a lot this season, deserved a better fate.

The Angels came out in full ambush mode, swinging at Olson's first five pitches and 16 of 22 through two innings. He had to navigate through a few messy innings and he did that expertly.

Early on, he was able to use the Angels’ aggressiveness to his advantage, getting them to swing at pitches on the edge or off the plate.

He gave up a first-pitch single to Nolan Schanuel to start the game but got the next three hitters on just seven pitches. Then in the span of three pitches in the second inning, Olson was in a first-and-third, no-out mess.

He responded by striking out Zach Neto, Mickey Moniak and Jo Adell. He got Moniak to chase three sliders and he froze Adell with an 0-2 heater after getting two chase strikes with sliders.
