Olson puts up brave fight but Angels edge Tigers in 10th

In the third inning, the Angels altered their approach. It was the second time through their order and they were more patient, trying to capitalize on Olson pitching to the edges of the zone.

It worked. They loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a single, again with no outs. And again, Olson didn’t flinch. He struck out Miguel Sano and was ahead of Willie Calhoun when he uncorked a pitch that bounced past catcher Jake Rogers.

Rogers tried to make a backhanded pick of the ball instead of trying to body-block it. One run scored and the other two runners moved up.

A second run scored on a ground out to first and then Olson struck out O’Hoppe to end the inning.

Olson pitched around a leadoff double by Schanuel in the fifth and a leadoff walk in the sixth, as well. The Angels ended up 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position against Olson.

Olson finished his six innings at 98 pitches. He posted a season high nine strikeouts and got 10 whiffs on 16 swings with his slider.

The Tigers scratched across a couple of runs early against Angels starter Griffin Canning. They took advantage of an error by shortstop Neto and an infield hit by Matt Vierling to load the bases with no outs in the first inning.

They only squeezed one run out of that opportunity, on a ground out by Colt Keith.

In the fourth, they parlayed three singles and a sacrifice fly by Rogers into two runs.

Rogers delivered the big blow in the sixth. Canning hit Justyn-Henry Malloy with a pitch with two outs. His first pitch to Rogers was a slider up and in that spun Rogers out of the box.

The very next pitch was a 93-mph fastball and Rogers shellacked it. He sent it 443 feet (107 mph exit velocity) into the seats in left field. It was his sixth home run of the season and it gave the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

The Angels got back in the game in the bottom of the seventh against Brieske. He hadn’t allowed a run in his last five outing, covering 8.2 innings. But he couldn’t finish his inning.

He walked No. 9 hitter Adell, gave up a single to Luis Rengifo and a two-run double by Taylor Ward.

The Tigers, as was the case for 6.1 innings Friday, didn't score against the Angels' bullpen, not even with the free runner in the 10th.

The Angels made several outstanding defensive plays throughout the night. Second baseman Luis Guillorme made a stellar catch and tag to nab Riley Greene trying to steal second in the ninth. He also made a strong play on a ball up the middle hit by Mark Canha in the 10th.

The 10th ended with shortstop Neto making a slick backhand play to get Keith.
