Trump to visit Michigan's Traverse City, Novi in weekend campaign stops
Published in Political News
Former President Donald Trump will make two stops in Michigan this weekend with about 10 days left before the Nov. 5 election.
Trump will rally with supporters at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City Friday night and at Suburban Showplace in Novi at noon Saturday, according to an advisory from his campaign.
The visit to Traverse City will mark Trump's furthest visit in northern Michigan in the 2024 cycle. He visited the city the day before the 2020 election but failed to secure Michigan in his bid for the presidency that year.
Trump's running mate, JD Vance, is expected in Waterford Thursday for a rally, and Vice President Kamala Harris will campaign with former first lady Michelle Obama at a still undisclosed location in Michigan on Saturday.
In press releases announcing the Traverse City and Novi stops, the Trump campaign warned of further economic woes should Harris be elected president, zeroing in on inflation, recent layoffs by Stellantis and the scaling back of production of Ford's all-electric F-150 Lightning.
"Between the stringent emission standards and lack of consumer demand, companies are being set up for failure," the campaign said. "The 'clean energy economy' is proving to be nothing more than a job-killing fantasy that’s putting hardworking Michiganders out of work."
Grand Traverse County has become a battleground in recent years in Michigan, with one of its House seats flipped to Democratic state Rep. Betsy Coffia in 2022.
Trump won Grand Traverse County by 12 percentage points in 2016 over Democrat Hillary Clinton and by about 3 percentage points over Biden in 2020. But in 2022, Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer carried it 52%-46% over Republican Tudor Dixon.
Democrats have won the one-time Republican stronghold of Oakland County, where Novi is located, for the past several presidential and midterm cycles.
Trump lost Oakland County to Clinton by roughly 8 percentage points in 2016. Four years later, in 2020, Trump lost the county to Biden by roughly 14 percentage points, a significant dropoff that damaged his statewide chances.
Trump won the state of Michigan over Clinton in 2016 by about 10,704 votes, or 47.3%-47%. Trump lost the state to Biden in 2020 by 154,188 votes, 51%-48% .
