Q: I deal with depression often and am more concerned about the frequency than the depression itself. I’m not sure if it is actually depression or discouragement. Maybe it’s just disappointment, but are there examples in the Bible of people who followed God yet dealt with these struggles? – D.A.

A: There are many forms of depression. From a medical point of view, doctors urge people to seek professional help – particularly when depression reoccurs. But it is also possible to receive help from God to deliver people from unknown fears. He helps His people and strengthens them spiritually and emotionally. It’s so important to learn to trust God in every circumstance and to keep our eyes on Him.

The great Prophet Elijah got so discouraged that he even asked God to take away his life (see 1 Kings 19). There were probably many things that contributed to Elijah’s depression – physical weariness, hunger, and sense of defeat. He felt he had not been successful, fearing the future; perhaps fearing that his enemies would kill him. But the heart of the matter was that Elijah was concentrating on his circumstances rather than on God. God’s answer was to meet his physical needs by giving him rest and food, but more than that, God gave him a new vision of the glory and power and love of God. Elijah went on to do many great things in the Name of the Lord.

God loves His people, and He wants us to know that He is with us in every situation. Christ can take away our fears. “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine” (Isaiah 43:1, NKJV). This can be our experience as we walk with Christ each day.
