Can we as Christians really carry out Biblical teaching when it says to bless those that persecute you?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: I used to think that persecution of Christians only happened in countries steeped in violent ignorance, but seeing things happening in the 21 st century makes me afraid that I won’t know how to prepare my young children for the future. Can we as Christians really carry out Biblical teaching when it says to bless those that persecute you? – B.P.
A: Persecution isn’t confined only to physical torture and death; it can take many forms. A person who serves Christ and exhibits purity and integrity in life isn’t necessarily welcomed by those who live differently. They may even react in scorn or refuse to include a Christian in their social gatherings because his or her presence is a rebuke to them. An employee may find his or her advancement blocked because a supervisor is prejudiced against Christians. A teenage girl may find herself laughed at because she refuses to join in the immorality of her schoolmates, or a young man may find that his refusal to get involved with alcohol or drugs makes him unpopular with those who do.
But whatever form persecution takes, the Bible tells us not to give in to the pressures we face, nor are we to lash out at those who oppose us. Instead, we’re to do all we can to show Christ’s love to them. “Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not” (Romans 12:14, KJV). There’s no doubt the Bible teaches that every believer who’s faithful to Christ must be prepared to be persecuted at the hands of those who are enemies of the Gospel. “Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12, RSV).
Here’s something to contemplate for those who are persecuted: When the godless plot, God laughs (see Psalms 2:4; 37:12–13). When the godless prosper, don’t fret (see Psalm 37:7).
