Is anything in the Bible that says we should commit ourselves to God?

Q: While attending a conference on joy, I heard a speaker challenge those in attendance to commit themselves to God. I’ve been in church all my life but I’ve never heard that said. The speaker passed out a little card with a prayer on it, asking us to read it and sign. I am careful about what I put my signature on, so I left without doing so; however, I am curious if there is anything in the Bible that says we should commit ourselves to God. – C.A.
A: Suppose you are walking along the road and you come to a deep gorge. The bridge has been washed away, and jumping across the gorge is not an option. Seemingly, you have no hope of reaching your destination. But off in the distance you notice another bridge that people are crossing. What would you have to do to get across?
First, go to that bridge believing it will hold you. Then commit yourself to it; put your full weight on it and walk across to the other side. It isn’t enough to say you believe it can hold you – you must step out in faith believing it will hold you and guide you to safety.
This illustrates what it means to commit your life to Jesus Christ. By His death and resurrection, Jesus bridged the gap between God and us – a gap caused by sin. But simply believing intellectually that He has done this is not enough. Like that bridge across the gorge, we must trust Him and commit our lives to Him, asking Him to forgive our sin and trust in Him. When we do, we will discover that He can be trusted to save us, because He truly is the bridge between God and us.
