San Diego Symphony's upcoming season is most extensive in orchestra's history

SAN DIEGO — It’s a record: The 78 concerts the San Diego Symphony will present between the Sept. 28 reopening of its Jacobs Music Center and May 31 of next year are, by far, the most the orchestra has scheduled in any season of its 114-year history.

It is also the most ambitious season the orchestra has undertaken, the better to celebrate the results of its four-year, $125 million-plus renovation of its downtown concert hall.

The 95-year-old venue was most recently known as Jacobs Music Center’s Copley Symphony Hall (and, before that, the Fox Theatre). Under any name, it is set to be reborn next month as a state-of-the-art concert hall that retains its sense of history.

The concert lineup includes such esteemed guest artists as pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Alisa Weilerstein and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.

“Everything we are doing is to develop the sound of the orchestra,” said San Diego Symphony Music Director Rafael Payare. “We are ready to celebrate our new hall with our audience.”
