4 Michigan teens plead no contest to assault in 2023 Warren shooting

DETROIT — Four Macomb County high school students charged in a 2023 shooting that paralyzed a person pleaded no contest to charges, an official announced Tuesday.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement that the teens each pleaded to assault with intent to murder, a life felony, armed robbery, a life felony, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, also a life felony.
He said three of the defendants also pleaded no contest to using a firearm during the commission of a felony, a two-year felony.
The four are scheduled to be sentenced in Macomb County Circuit Court on March 26, officials said.
A no-contest plea in Michigan courts is treated like a guilty plea at sentencing.
Lucido said the four made the pleas with no sentencing agreement. Despite being charged as adults, prosecutors did not release the names of the teens because they are juveniles.
Authorities accused the defendants, all Warren Woods Tower High School students at the time, in a shooting that happened at about 3:10 p.m. on Sept. 14, 2023, near Martin and Bunert roads in Warren. The four, all ages 14 and 15, were charged a little more than a week later.
Police said the victim was shot in the throat, arm, and leg while driving a blue sedan. His car crashed into a front lawn. Witnesses told investigators they saw three suspects run from the scene after the shooting. The attack prompted lockdowns at the school and nearby Macomb Community College.
The four suspects were arrested during classes at Warren Woods Tower High School on Sept. 18. 2023.
"This was a senseless act of violence that could have resulted in even greater tragedy," Lucido said Tuesday. "We hope this serves as a powerful reminder that such acts of violence even by juveniles will not be tolerated, and justice will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law."
Warren saw 598 cases of aggravated/felonious assault in 2023 up more than 12% from the previous year, according to the latest data from the Michigan State Police.
The city had four non-fatal shootings in 2023, a 20% drop from five in 2022, MSP said.
