SAN DIEGO — Crews were battling a fast-moving brush fire threatening structures near the rural community of Campo in East San Diego County on Monday.

The fire had reached about 350 acres shortly before 7 p.m. Pacific time. “Firefighters are making good progress. The fire activity has decreased significantly,” the agency said on X, formerly Twitter.

A few hours earlier, Cal Fire Capt. Robert Johnson said the fire was spreading rapidly as firefighters battled it from the ground and the air. More than 40 fire-suppression resources had been assigned to the fight, including fire engines and trucks as well as multiple aircraft, Johnson said.

“It is rocky, hilly terrain,” Johnson said.

The fire was off La Posta Road, north of Campo. It was first reported around 12:30 p.m. By midafternoon, the temperature in nearby Boulevard had reached 88 degrees with wind gusts of up to 19 mph reported. The winds were blowing toward the east, he said.

Residents on both sides of Interstate 8 west of Boulevard were under evacuation orders and evacuation warnings, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. People seeking shelter were being directed to a temporary evacuation point at Golden Acre Casino at 1800 Golden Acorn Way in Campo.

The Sheriff’s Department said Monday evening that the following roads have been closed: Old Highway 80 from Kitchen Creek Road to Crestwood Road; and State Route 94 from La Posta Road to Old Highway 80.
