SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It’s been one year since the events of Oct. 7 sparked what’s evolved into a broader conflict in the Middle East.

Amid the wider conflict and tension, local organizations throughout the Sacramento area have planned peaceful remembrance events for Monday to commemorate the one-year anniversary.

Roughly 1,200 people were killed in Israel by Hamas militants that day and more than 200 hostages were taken, some of whom died, were released or remain in custody. Israel’s subsequent bombing and invasion of the Gaza Strip has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, according to the territory’s health ministry, which includes militants and civilians.

Israel has recently increased bombings in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, growing the conflict’s reach.

Federal security officials have warned about potential threats in the U.S. in response to the one-year anniversary, including the possibility of violent extremist events and hate crimes threatening public safety.

Still, peaceful events are planned to reflect on the lives lost at all stages of the conflict. Here’s what’s happening Monday around the capital region for the somber anniversary.

Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region

The Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region has planned a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. on the west steps of the state Capitol downtown, led by local rabbis. The event will include songs, readings, silence and reflections on the lives lost Oct. 7.

A two-part candlelight vigil in Davis is also scheduled for Monday. A public vigil begins at 6 p.m. at Central Park, 401 C Street, followed by grieving and reflection sessions at Hillel House, 328 A St.

Sacramento Area Peace Action

Sacramento Area Peace Action is hosting a candlelight vigil from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Cesar Chavez Plaza, 10th and J streets.

Sacramento Regional Coalition for Palestinian Rights

The Sacramento Regional Coalition for Palestinian Rights is holding a candlelight vigil to mourn all the lives lost throughout the Middle East during the conflict. The group plans to walk from the park to the corner of 10th and J streets to place candles at a Palestinian flag mural.
