DALLAS (UPI) -- A Texas man captured a heart-wrenching photo of a Dallas area dog standing watch over another deceased canine on the side of the road.

Samuel Flores came across the Great Pyrenees standing over another dog, apparently hit by a car near the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Flores then posted the photo to local animal right's activist, Julie Fennell's Facebook page. Fennell then passed it on to an animal advocacy group who sent a volunteer to assist the dog until she was able to make it to the scene herself.

"He was just kind of sitting guard, like a statue, just sitting there watching guard over his friend's body," Fennell told NBC Dallas. It really looks like she was hit in the road, you can see the blood on the road, and it looks like he drug her up onto the grass out of the road.

It is unclear whether or not the Great Pyrenees was stray, or how it was related to the other dog. It was not neutered and did not have microchip or collar.

The dog was later taken to an animal shelter where it was held to be claimed by its owner before being transferred to local rescue group Saving Pyrenees In Need (SPIN) to be put up for adoption.

"Everybody is calling and excited," Harriet Holiday of SPIN told CBS Dallas. Everybody wants him. So we have no doubt he'll be adopted within hours if his owner does not claim him.
