Published in Cats & Dogs News

Lean, athletic, graceful, and powerful with strong hindquarters that allow it to move rapidly and turn quickly, the German Shorthaired Pointer is a breed of dog developed in the 1800s in Germany for hunting.

These dogs love interaction appreciate active families who give them an outlet for their energy. They have a strong hunting instinct, which isn't always good for other small pets. With some training, however, it's not unusual to quickly discern what is prey and what isn't. German Shorthaired Pointers needs plenty of vigorous activity, preferably off lead.

This is one of the few hunting breeds that can perform virtually all gundog roles. It's pointer and retriever, an upland bird dog and water dog, can be used for hunting larger game, and has a scent hound's talented nose. An intelligent and highly trainable breed, they were developed to be capable of working out of sight of its handler. Thus they often seem to have a mind of their own, and so require training to ensure that the owner is in charge.
