Dog Breeds - Shih Tzu

on

Published in Cats & Dogs News

Allegedly one the oldest and smallest of the Tibetan holy dogs (with a vaguely lion-like look being associated with the Snowlion) the Shih Tzu was bred to sit around the palace of the Emperor of China and bark when people or animals approached.

Shih Tzu's are small, very sturdy, long-bodied and short-legged dogs a long flowing coat that comes in many colors and patterns. They carry themselves with a proud, dignified, aristocratic bearing, yet are also happy and playful.

The breed doesn't require much exercise, tends to be less "yappy" than other toy breeds and is usually friendly with strangers and other pets. More than most other breeds, Shih Tzus need a great deal of companionship and do not like being left alone for more than a few hours. Also, while a hypoallergenic breed which doesn't tend to shed, without frequent brushing, Shih Tzus become a matted mess.
