CBS Sports' Jim Nantz on AFC championship game: 'There is significant history at our doorstep'

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — I’m not sure Jim Nantz, Tony Romo or Tracy Wolfson would call GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium their home away from home, but when the calendar turns to January, they often can be found in Kansas City.
For the sixth time in the last seven years, Nantz and Romo will be in a TV booth at Arrowhead to call the AFC championship game between the Chiefs and Bills. Wolfson will be in a familiar place as she reports from the sideline.
Nantz is aware not only of the Chiefs’ quest to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls, but their attempt to join the New York Giants as the only teams to appear in a title game five times in a six-season span.
The Giants did it, from 1958 to 1963, but never won a championship. No NFL team has played in the Super Bowl five times in six years.
“What the Chiefs are doing is so spectacular it’s hard to put into words,” Nantz told The Kansas City Star. “The only thing you can compare it to is the Patriots dynasty of (Bill) Belichick and (Tom) Brady. I called the Patriots AFC championship game appearances. Never thought we would see it again. Then along comes Andy (Reid) and Patrick (Mahomes).
“There is significant history at our doorstep — the first team to play in the Super Bowl five out of six years. The first three-peat champion. These next two weeks could re-write the history books. Possibly even defining the greatest dynasty the NFL has ever seen.”
Nantz knows a little something about history himself. He called his 500th NFL game when he was behind the microphone for the Bills’ 31-7 win over the Broncos in an AFC wild-card game.
CBS Sports’ plans Sunday
Nantz, Romo and Wolfson won’t be the only CBS broadcasters at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.
“The NFL Today” crew will be in KC for the game.
James Brown, Bill Cowher, Nate Burleson, Matt Ryan, JJ Watt and Jonathan Jones will leave the studio for Arrowhead Stadium.
And CBS Sports will have its “Doink Camera” in use on Sunday.
