Dolphins GM says Tyreek Hill never requested trade; team working to rebuild relationship

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Maybe Tyreek Hill doesn’t want out of Miami just yet.

At least that’s where the Dolphins brass stands as of Tuesday, as general manager Chris Grier and coach Mike McDaniel wrapped up the 2024 season with a news conference Tuesday, two days after the Dolphins season came to a close and Hill expressed his frustration Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

Grier said Hill did not backtrack on any of his public comments, but he also never asked for a trade directly with the organization.

“Mike and I both had conversations with Tyreek here (Monday), productive conversations. I will keep those between us,” Grier said. “The one thing I will say is, in a frustrating season, he was very emotional in a game where we had a chance (to make the playoffs).”

The Dolphins, who finished the season 8-9, could’ve reached the postseason with a win against the New York Jets and a Denver Broncos loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Neither of those things happened, and it became clear very quickly, as the Broncos game was going on at the same time, the resting Chiefs were not going to put up a fight.

“All of that, with him playing through his injury, just kind of bubbled to a point,” Grier said. “From our conversations, again, we’ll keep that private, but we had productive conversations.”

McDaniel said that conversation went for an hour Monday.

“The competitive spirit can represent post-game, especially in a season or a game that nobody likes,” McDaniel said. “It can allude to a relationship being one way. I think I was very direct with him. He was very honest. And it was great terms that we were discussing. Discussed multiple things, including, without wavering, that it’s not acceptable to leave the game and won’t be tolerated in the future. He embraced accountability, and I wouldn’t say there’s anything necessarily to fix as much as we had to clear the air in a rough and tumultuous situation.”

Hill took himself out of Sunday’s game as the result in Denver was becoming apparent. He also cited his nagging wrist injury as he changed his story postgame in East Rutherford, N.J., over why he wasn’t in. McDaniel said it was simply told to him over his headset that Hill was unavailable.

Hill sounded off after the Jets game — and Miami’s season — was over.

“I just got to do what’s best for me and my family, if that’s here or if that’s wherever the case may be. I’m going to open that door for myself. I’m opening the door,” said Hill, who finished the season shy of 1,000 receiving yards.

“I’m out. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I got to do what’s best for my career — because I’m too much of a competitor to be just out there.”

Later on, Hill changed his profile picture on social media platform X to one of his face superimposed on former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown’s body when he infamously ran off the field midgame against the Jets with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On Tuesday, the lead image on Hill’s social media account was restored as one of him in a Dolphins uniform.
