Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes feared to have high-ankle sprain: report

The injury that forced Patrick Mahomes out of Sunday’s fourth quarter is feared to be a high-ankle sprain, according to a report.

Mahomes was scheduled to undergo further testing on his right ankle Monday, according to NFL Media, but the situation reportedly does not seem dire for the Chiefs’ superstar quarterback.

Still, high-ankle sprains typically take longer to recover from than the more common low ankle sprain, making Mahomes’ situation one to monitor on a short week for Kansas City.

Mahomes, 29, suffered the injury with 7:57 left in the Chief’s 21-7 win in Cleveland when he leaped on a fourth-down throw. Browns defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson wrapped up Mahomes’ legs while fellow lineman Mike Hall Jr. laid a hit on the quarterback.

Mahomes limped off the field, then remained on the sideline for the Chiefs’ final two offensive possessions as Carson Wentz took over at quarterback, leading by two touchdowns.

After the game, Mahomes appeared to be walking gingerly. He was later seen getting onto a cart outside of the Chiefs’ locker room.

“Usually it’s kind of the day after when you kind of get a good sense of it,” Mahomes said of the severity of his injury. “I feel like I could have finished the game in different circumstances.”

Mahomes has not missed a game due to injury since 2019. He played through a right high-ankle sprain in Super Bowl LVII in 2023 as the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Sunday that Mahomes’ ankle was sore but “not broken.”

“He’ll get started on the rehab part of it as we go, and then we’ll just have to see how he does down the road here,” Reid said.

The Chiefs seek to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, while Mahomes aims to become the fourth quarterback to win the Super Bowl four times.

Kansas City improved to 13-1 with Sunday’s win and maintained a two-game cushion for the AFC’s top seed — and the conference’s lone first-round bye — over the Buffalo Bills, who improved to 11-3 on Sunday. The Bills hold the tiebreaker after beating the Chiefs last month.

The Chiefs host the Houston Texans on Saturday.
