Cornerback Steven Nelson comes out of retirement to sign with Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs’ habit of bringing back former players continued on Monday with the signing of cornerback Steven Nelson to the practice squad.
Nelson was a third-round draft choice of the Chiefs in 2015 and spent four years in Kansas City. He then played two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, one with the Philadelphia Eagles and two more with the Houston Texans.
He announced his retirement after last season but said he was keeping his options open and would play again in the right situation.
Nelson joins running back Kareem Hunt and wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster as players who had previously played for the Chiefs, left the organization and returned this season.
Kansas City has a need at cornerback. The Chiefs lost starter Jaylen Watson with an ankle injury in Week 7 at San Francisco. In Sunday’s victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, Joshua Williams left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury.
Coach Andy Reid said Williams was “feeling better” on Monday.
Nelson will add depth to the position, Reid said.
“We’ll see how things work out, see where he’s at,” Reid said. “He’d be a welcome addition if it all works out.”
Nelson became a starter in 2016, his second year with the Chiefs. In 2018, he led the team with four interceptions.
He matched that total last season with the Texans and added an 82-yard pick-six in the wild-card playoff game against the Cleveland Browns.
The Chiefs, 12-1, have four games remaining in the regular season, starting with Sunday’s contest in Cleveland.
