Here's the latest on DK Metcalf's shoulder injury as Seahawks prepare to face Jets

RENTON, Wash. — Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf missed a second day of practice on Thursday with a shoulder injury.

Seahawks coaches did not hold media availabilities Thursday so there were no additional details on the nature and possible severity of the injury.

Head coach Mike Macdonald will speak to the media following Friday's practice when the Seahawks will also release a game status report, at which point it will become more clear if Metcalf is in danger of sitting out Sunday's road game against the New York Jets.

Metcalf was not mentioned as suffering an injury during last Sunday's 16-6 win over Arizona in which he played 50 of 64 offensive snaps, though he did appear to take a hit on his shoulder when making an 18-yard catch that converted a third-and-eight on the team's final offensive series. It's unclear, though, if that might have led to the injury.

Metcalf was one of six Seahawks who sat out the team's Thanksgiving Day practice.

Also sitting out were receiver Tyler Lockett (knee), defensive lineman Leonard Williams (knee), tight end Brady Russell (foot), offensive tackle Abe Lucas (knee) and nose tackle Johnathan Hankins (non-injury-related/rest).

Lockett has dealt with several injuries that have limited him in practice this year, including an oblique issue, but has played in every game. But he has not recently been listed with a knee injury before cropping up on the injury report this week.

The injuries to Metcalf and Lockett were not revealed until after Macdonald spoke to the media on Wednesday.

Williams has been limited in practice the last two weeks but then played on Sunday.

Russell has missed the last two games while Lucas may have been getting a rest day after returning from a knee surgery to play for the first time two weeks ago.

Three others were limited — outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu (thigh), cornerback AJ Finley (ankle) and linebacker Ernest Jones IV (elbow/rest).

Nwosu was designated as returning to practice this week off injured reserve and Macdonald said Monday it was not expected Nwosu would play Sunday against the New York Jets.

Finley was claimed off waivers from the Chargers on Tuesday.

Among full participants were tight end Noah Fant (groin), who is hoping to return this week after sitting out the last three games, receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (back), who sat out against Arizona with an injury suffered the previous week against the 49ers, and offensive tackle Stone Forsythe, who also returned to practice this week off IR while dealing with a hand injury.

Nwosu and Forsythe can each practice for 21 days before needing to be activated to the 53-man roster.

Metcalf missed only one game in the first five seasons of his career, that coming in 2023 when he sat out against Arizona due to rib and hip injuries.

But he missed games against Buffalo on Oct. 27 and the Rams on Nov. 3 due to a sprained knee before returning after the bye to play against the 49ers and Cardinals.

Seattle added some receiver depth earlier this week, signing Cornell Powell to the practice squad. Powell was a fifth-round pick by the Chiefs in 2021 out of Clemson and has played in three NFL games while spending most of the last four years on KC's practice squad before being released earlier this month. Seattle also has Myles Boykin on the practice squad as well as backups Shenault, Jake Bobo, Cody White and Dareke Young behind the starting trio of Lockett, Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Familiar names on Jets' defensive coaching staff

Among the members of the Jets' defensive coaching staff are former Seahawk player and assistant coach Marquand Manuel and Nathaniel Willingham, son of former UW coach Tyrone Willingham.

Both coach with the Jets' secondary — Manuel's title is defensive backs/safeties and Willingham's is defensive backs/nickels.

Manuel started 13 games for the Seahawks in 2005 when Seattle advanced to its first Super Bowl, and three more in the playoffs, including the Super Bowl loss to Pittsburgh.

He then began his coaching career with the Seahawks from 2012-14, including serving as defensive assistant when Seattle won the Super Bowl in 2013. Manuel also worked with the Atlanta Falcons under former Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and has been with the Jets since 2021.

Willingham, a graduate of Skyline High, coached at Skyline from 2008-12 before moving into the college ranks (which included four years at Stanford) before moving into the NFL with Denver in 2019.

He has been with the Jets since 2022, working first as defensive assistant for two seasons before moving into his current role this year.

Jeff Ulbrich is serving as the Jets' interim head coach after the firing of Robert Saleh on Oct. 8. Saleh was also a former Seahawks assistant, serving as defensive quality control coach from 2011-13.

The Jets were 2-3 under Saleh and are 1-5 under Ulbrich.
