Jerod Mayo didn’t even let Jermaine Wiggins finish the question. The New England Patriots head coach knew where the radio host and former tight end was going.

Wiggins was trying to ask Mayo if the Patriots planned to introduce some packages for rookie backup quarterback Drake Maye given how well the offensive line protected starter Jacoby Brissett in their Week 1 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

“Come on, Wiggy,” Mayo interrupted Wiggins on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.” “We won the game. Come on, Wiggy. It’s about Jacoby. I would also say, Jacoby, how many plays did he make yesterday with his legs? From a defensive perspective, you don’t really expect that. And when he does it, he does it. He did a good job. Jacoby did a good job controlling the game, not making mistakes, we won the turnover battle, we won the hidden yardage battle, and that’s what I’m talking about.”

Earlier in the interview, Mayo put his full support behind Brissett, who was 15-of-24 for 121 yards and carried the ball four times for 30 yards before kneel-downs.

“As a coaching staff, as an organization, we’re 100% behind Jacoby. I just read that off this paper,” Mayo said laughing. “We’re 100% behind Jacoby. We have a developmental plan for Drake.”

Mayo, who was riding a high after Sunday’s win, also quipped Monday morning on WEEI that Brissett making plays with his legs was “surprising, because he’s probably like the slowest black quarterback in the league.”
