SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Netflix has formally announced an upcoming series that will feature five of the NBA’s biggest stars, including Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis.

“Starting 5” will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the 2023-24 NBA season through the eyes of the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James, Miami Heat’s Jimmy Butler, Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards, Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum and Sabonis.

The first of 10 45-minute episodes will premiere Oct. 9, days after teams report for training camp. The series was produced by Uninterrupted, founded by James and business manager Maverick Carter, in association with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions and Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions.

Netflix released a synopsis Wednesday, providing new details and confirming earlier reports the show would feature Sabonis, James, Butler, Edwards and Tatum.

“The series captures their battles on and off the court as they chase greatness, push through injuries, and balance the demands of family and legacy,” the news release said. “James pushes himself harder than ever to stay healthy — and dominant — in his 21st season, while Edwards electrifies with his rapid rise. Butler’s relentless drive propels the Heat, Sabonis anchors the Kings with his versatile play, and Tatum leads the Celtics in their quest for a record 18th championship. Starting 5 delivers an unfiltered view of life at the pinnacle of professional basketball.”

Netflix has previously worked with Uninterrupted on sports programs such as “Hustle,” “The Redeem Team,” “Neymar: The Perfect Chaos,” “Naomi Osaka,” “UNTOLD: Sign Stealer” and “The Playbook.”

The streaming service is expanding its reach to the NBA following the success of its “Quarterback” documentary series. Omaha Productions worked with NFL Films and 2PM Productions to produce the first season of “Quarterback,” which premiered last summer. The series featured Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota, following them on and off the field.

Sabonis came to Sacramento in the blockbuster trade that sent Tyrese Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers in February 2022. The 27-year-old Lithuanian center helped the Kings end a 16-year playoff drought in 2022-23. They fell short of the playoffs last season, but Sabonis earned All-NBA Third Team honors for the second time in his career.

Sabonis averaged 19.4 points, 13.7 rebounds and 8.2 assists in his eighth NBA season. He led the league in rebounding, double-doubles (77) and triple-doubles (26).

Sabonis and his wife, Shashana, had their first child in March 2022. They had their second child last summer. In April 2023, as the Kings were heading into a first-round playoff series against the Golden State Warriors, the family revealed Sabonis was converting to Judaism. He owns a home in Napa, where he has hosted team dinners and retreats.
