NEW YORK — A scary moment occurred at Yankee Stadium on Sunday when a piece of Giancarlo Stanton’s broken bat struck home-plate umpire Nick Mahrley in the neck.

Mahrley left the field on a cart after receiving medical attention on the field. Later in the afternoon, the Yankees announced Mahrley was undergoing a full battery of tests.

Stanton’s bat splintered near its handle on a swing that resulted in a bloop single during the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 10-3 win against the Colorado Rockies.

The detached barrel went flying backward at Mahrley, who immediately dropped to a knee upon being hit. Medical staffers applied a brace to Mahrley’s neck, and he appeared to sit on a stretcher under his own power before he was carted off.

“When I was in the box, I didn’t hear anything, a groan or anything,” Stanton said. “He took it like a champ. I think he’s gonna be OK, so that’s all good.”

Stanton and Aaron Judge stood near home plate during much of the on-field delay.

“You never like to see that,” said Judge, who went from first to second on Stanton’s hit. “I was running the bases, but immediately when you kind of peek back and you see him down like that and you see the replay of what happened, that’s never good. We’re definitely all hoping for the best with Nick.”

The Yankee Stadium crowd cheered for Mahrley as the cart left the field.

The game resumed play with three umpires, with crew chief Marvin Hudson moving from first base to behind home plate.
