Ceddanne Rafaela, who lined the ball back at Vasquez, was the first batter in the bottom of the fifth. The euphoria of the top of the fifth hadn’t even worn off.

It was the Padres’ second nine-run inning of the season. They did it May 31 at Kansas City, as well, and are the only team in the major leagues with two innings scoring that many runs.

Vasquez, who threw five scoreless innings against the Brewers on Saturday, did not allow a run until the fourth inning.

Not much had happened in the game to that point, as the teams had two hits apiece.

The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a single and a walk at the start and a two-out single by Connor Wong.

And then, suddenly, it was a circus of hits and runs — two homers, a double, five singles and a walk before the 10th batter in the fifth inning was retired. In all, the Padres sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth.

Ha-Seong Kim began the string with a single, and Kyle Higashioka gave the Padres a lead with his eighth home run in 44 at-bats — a blast that sailed well over the Green Monster.

A double by Bryce Johnson, single by Luis Arraez and walk by Jurickson Profar loaded the bases and ended Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta’s night. Jake Cronenworth fell behind 0-2 against reliever Greg Weissert before lining a changeup below the zone into left field to bring in two runs.

After Manny Machado beat out an infield single, reloading the bases, Donovan Solano grounded a single up the middle to drive in two more runs. Jackson Merrill then drove a ball 407 feet to center field for a three-run homer.

A strikeout by Kim was the first out of the inning.
