BOSTON — Due to severe weather, Wednesday’s series finale between the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays has been suspended and will resume on Monday, Aug. 26 at 2:05 p.m. ET as part of a split doubleheader.

The game was called off shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the top of the second inning after heavy rain and thunderstorms moved into the area. By the time the game was called following a 1:48 delay the warning track was beginning to flood and water was pooling in the outfield. With no respite in the forecast, there was little chance the game could have continued.

The tarp came onto the field with one out, one man on and the score still tied at 0-0. At that point Red Sox starting pitcher Kutter Crawford had thrown 22 pitches, posting two strikeouts and two walks over 1.1 scoreless innings. Yariel Rodriguez, Toronto’s starting pitcher, threw 15 pitches in a scoreless bottom of the first.

It’s unlikely either pitcher would have been able to return after the lengthy delay, so the decision to postpone the game saved both sides from having to tax their respective bullpens.

The Red Sox will have an off-day Thursday before opening a three-game series at home against the San Diego Padres over the weekend. Nick Pivetta will start Friday, Tanner Houck will take the ball Saturday and Josh Winckowski will pitch the finale on Sunday.

Toronto, meanwhile, will travel to the Bronx to play four games against the New York Yankees.
