House speaker invites Trump to address Congress on March 4

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson invited President Donald Trump to address a joint session of Congress on March 4, seeking to set the stage for his first major speech to lawmakers since he returned to the White House.
Johnson portrayed his invitation as seeking to capitalize on Trump’s early flurry of policy measures, including a rush of a executive orders that have delighted conservative supporters.
The speech would give Trump an opportunity to lay out an agenda for which congressional support will be needed, including his pledges to extend his 2017 package of tax cuts and potentially seek additional tax relief for Americans — while confronting the prospect of record national debt.
Johnson said he’s inviting Trump “to share your America First vision for our legislative future.” The administration and Congress “working together have the chance to make these next four years some of the most consequential in our nation’s history,” he said.
Presidents typically give State of the Union speeches early in the year, but are often delayed in inaugural years because of the address a president gives when he is sworn in on Jan. 20.
