Pollster Nate Silver wants President Joe Biden to resign from office immediately and make VP Kamala Harris the nation’s first female president, albeit briefly.

“Is there any particular reason to assume Biden is competent to be president right now?” the FiveThirtyEight founder posted on social media Wednesday. “It’s a very difficult job.”

Silver’s comment included a link to a Washington Post story about the 82-year-old president avoiding reporters as his time in office comes to an end.

Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race in July so his vice president could run instead. Pressure for him to step aside mounted in the wake of a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump in which the president appeared disoriented and incoherent.

“It’s a dangerous world,” Silver continued on Wednesday. “Extremely high-stakes decisions in Ukraine. He should resign and let Harris serve out the last 2 months.”

Ukraine’s war with Russia escalated in recent days when the Biden White House granted its blessing for the U.S. ally to fire long-range missiles into Russia. Russian leader Vladimir Putin responded by indicating he won’t rule out a nuclear retaliation.

Following Trump’s victory in the election earlier this month, the VP’s former communications director suggested to CNN that Biden handing the reins to Harris in his final months as president would make him “the transitional figure” he sought to be.
