Harris, Trump in dead heat in latest presidential race poll

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are neck and neck in the race for the White House, according to new nationwide polling.

The latest New York Times/Siena Poll, conducted after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race on Sunday, shows Harris trailing Trump by only a single percentage point among likely voters asked who they would choose if the election was held on the day they took the survey (July 22-24).

Harris trails Trump by 2% among all 1,142 registered voters who responded to the poll, but that figure represents a significant narrowing of the gap from when Biden was still in the race. Trump held a 9% lead over the president in the first postdebate poll taken last month.

With a margin of error of 3.4% among likely voters and 3.3% among registered voters, the two candidates are essentially tied with more than three months to go before Election Day — even after Trump survived an assassination attempt, the Republicans held their party’s convention and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance was announced as Trump’s running mate.

The poll saw great support for Harris among Democrats, with 79% in favor of her being named the official nominee, while only 14% prefer another unnamed candidate.

Late Monday, Harris accumulated enough delegates to become the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee. She began vetting potential vice presidential candidates to join her on the ticket ahead of next month’s party convention in Chicago.

Harris also saw gains in areas where Biden was struggling before he left the race, including young and nonwhite voters. Among voters 45 and under, Harris was 10 points ahead of Trump, who had previously held a narrow lead over Biden.

Harris’ improvements in those areas would seem to indicate better standing in key battleground states, which could be reflected in other polls.

The poll also found more people (64%) were paying “a lot” of attention to the race compared with late last month (48%).

Among likely voters choosing an independent candidate, the poll found support for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had dipped to 6%, down from 9% at the end of June.

No other third-party candidate polled above 1% in the latest survey.
