Jim Rossman: Keep at least 2 browsers on your computer for troubleshooting

This week a reader writes, “I'm having trouble logging into my old legacy sbcglobal email account from my desktop. From the log on screen at att.net, here is the message that I get after I key in my password: 'Something's gone wrong. We may be having trouble with your connection. Connecting your device to Wi-Fi could help fix the issue or try again later. If you were using an app, close this page. Otherwise, start over.'

"I know that this problem is not unique to me, because I have friends with the same issue. I can still read my emails using my iPhone and iPad, but my friends can no longer access their accounts from any device. One of my friends took her phone to the AT&T store, but they couldn't get it to work either. When I Google this issue, the recommendation is to change your password, but I’m reluctant to do that because I'm afraid that I'll no longer be able to read my email from my phone."

Answer: As long as you are sure of the password, my advice to this reader is to try a different browser.

If you try to log in too many times with a wrong password, you’re going to get locked out.

The problem I see most often with web-based mail apps is that browsers get updated to add features or patch security holes and the email system doesn’t keep up.

If you’ve kept your browser up-to-date, and the email stops working, try a different browser and see if it behaves better.

I always recommend having at least two of the major browsers on your computer. I personally use Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari on my Mac and Chrome and Microsoft Edge on my Windows PC.

Edge is based on the Google Chrome browsing engine, so the compatibility should be very similar, but if I found something that didn’t work with Chrome or Edge, I’d try it on Firefox.

I’m happy to report the reader did have success in using a different browser and was able to access their email on the computer once again.
