As Count von Zeppelin had died in 1917, Dr. Hugo Eckener, a man who had long before envisioned dirigibles as vessels of peace rather than warfare, took command of the Zeppelin business. With the Treaty of Versailles having knocked out their competitor Schutte-Lanz, who had specialized entirely in military airships, the Zeppelin company resumed civilian flights quickly.
