How to Pick a Pet and Live Longer
Published in Cats & Dogs News
If you have never owned a pet then knowing how to choose the right pet for your personality is important. If you already have a pet and are considering adding another there are a few things you should know.
If you tell a pet owner that you are considering getting a pet and they will probably launch into a lengthy monologue about how wonderful their pet is. They will also probably tell you that having a pet is work and they are right.
Planning to add a pet in your life requires you to think about your lifestyle and the type of pet that would suit you best. After all, you are not getting a new pair of shoes that will be forgotten in a year or less.
You are going to be responsible for another living thing. How do you choose wisely?
• What type of home do you live in?
• How many hours are you away from home for work?
• Are you a laid back couch potato or something of an athlete?
• Are there children in your home?
• Do you like to travel frequently?
There is a good reason behind each of these questions. A person living in an apartment may not be allowed to have large dogs. A homeowner who does have a large backyard may need to fence it in.
Dogs and cats differ in their emotional and physical needs. A dog needs regular exercise and potty time during the day. A cat typically can entertain itself and can use a litter box.
If you have your heart set on a high energy dog like a lab then you will need to commit to lots of exercise and walks. If you are not quite up to this then choosing a breed that likes to lie in your lap is best.
Pets are a wonderful addition to a home with children but you will need to monitor the children and the pet until each has gotten used to the other.
If you like to travel you can still enjoy the love and companionship of a pet. You may need to find a good sitter while you are away to make sure your pet is well cared for. If you tend to travel by car or RV then you can take your new best friend with you!
You will want to consider the type of pet based upon your personality and lifestyle. You will need to make sure you get a good match in terms of their energy level and yours.
The fact is that research has shown for years that people with beloved pets are healthier both physically and mentally. The love that your pet, whether a dog or cat, will give you is like no other love you will ever receive!
