If you are a beach bum but hate leaving your dog at home during the summer months, don’t fret! You can have a fun-filled day with your canine companion if you do a little extra planning.

To help owners have the best beach experience possible with their dogs, the American Kennel Club offers the following safety tips.

Bring plenty of water. Be sure to bring plenty of fresh water for your dog to keep them from drinking ocean water. The high sodium content in the water along with other contaminants can be harmful to your dog’s health. Having fresh water on hand will keep them hydrated and decrease their chance of getting sick.

Provide shade. If you are planning to be at the beach for an extended period, be sure to have an umbrella with you. This will ensure that your dog has a place to get out of the sun and rest.

Take a dip. Taking a dip can be a good way for your pup to cool off. Many dogs like swimming, but contrary to popular belief, not all dogs know how to. Start your dog off slowly in shallow water, or with you nearby to give the dog support. You can begin training with a life vest to ease your dog into swimming. It is a good idea to keep a life jacket on hand even after they have learned to swim as a precaution.

Use sunscreen. Hairless dogs or dogs that have short and light-colored coats are especially vulnerable to the sun. It is always wise to apply a dog-friendly sunblock to make sure your four-legged friend is protected.

Rinse off. Don’t forget to rinse your dog off as soon as he is done playing. The bacteria from oceans, lakes and rivers can make your pet sick. Make sure to rinse or shampoo your dog’s coat and don’t forget to take special care to dry out their ears as well.
