Cat Breeds - Birman

on

Published in Cats & Dogs News

The Birman is said to have originated in western Burma, and cats with similar markings are recorded in documents from ancient Thailand. However, modern Birmans are a hybrid of the Siamese and Persian and may differ considerably from these Burmese temple cats.

Birmans are mostly known thanks to their long, silky hair, cobby body, small ears and, most notably, their "white gloves" which make them very distinctive. While all Birmans are all born white, within 14 days they begin to develop the distinctive markings, specifically the "white gloves" which they have on each paw, the breed being the only colorpoint coat that has fingers and toes in pure white. Having been bred for temperament and companionship they're extremely intelligent creatures, and take a genuine interest in whatever is taking place around them.
