You've just built your dream home from the colonial house plans that are just right. The house is beautiful, the rooms are in the perfect location, the kitchen is right off the cover of one of the national magazines about homes and you can't wait to move in. As you are packing up the old house you get rid of all of that old stuff you've been keeping for years and have never used. You have a garage sale and get rid of your junk, their treasure. The rest of it is carted off to a charitable organization that will put it to good use. All that is left is what you need in your brand new home, your dream house. As you pack you go over where the belongings will go in the new place. It dawns on you that you don't have much storage room in the new place. What now?

It's never too late to add storage and organizational items to a house, whether a ranch home plan or a two story, you can always tidy things up a bit. It is actually a good time to take a look at building in organizers before you actually move in. If you have interior walls that are non load bearing maybe you could add pass through shelves or closed off shelves. If you are in a two story is there a stair case with room under it that isn't being utilized for anything? Could it be enclosed and used for storage? Maybe even make the area into a closet if there is room. This would also be a good time to build shelves in the clothes closets and make them much more useful. There are organizers to build custom closets or do it yourself closets you can purchase and install yourself. If you are handy you could maybe do your own custom closets.

If your southern living home plans called for a garage have you thought about built in cabinets in the garage? It makes for lots of extra storage space and it is neat and appears clutter free. Now would be the time to build those or have them built. You can get them with or without doors. There are also many other storage ideas for the garage. You can have free standing shelf units that can be moved around as needed. There are shelves that go over the garage doors that are great for storing those items only needed once a year for holidays.

Even getting organizers that aren't permanent might make sense so when you do move in, everything will have a place and you will know where it is. Moving into a new home can be confusing as you never remember where you put everything. With a little up front planning and thinking about where everything will go prior to the move you will be surprised how easy it is to find everything.

Whether you used colonial house plans, a simple ranch home plan or your dream southern living home plans you can have an organized and efficient home with a little fore thought.
