DETROIT — Cadillac on Friday introduced Opulent Velocity — its latest concept vehicle that points to the luxury brand's plans to electrify performance vehicles.

Opulent Velocity is the second concept car Cadillac has shown this summer. In July, it revealed the Sollei ultra-luxury concept electric convertible that takes a bite out of the brand's history while showcasing the best of new technology. John Roth, vice president of global Cadillac, called the Sollei a "design exploration" that came out of the brand pushing boundaries on other products like the hand-built Celestiq EV.

Bryan Nesbitt, executive director of global Cadillac design, in a statement, called Opulent Velocity "an experience-based design study."

“It's the future vision of luxury performance, incorporating Cadillac’s leadership in hands-free driving capabilities, electrification and performance excellence," he said. "Opulent Velocity expresses the most artful integration of technology, luxury and exhilaration characterized by Cadillac’s halo V-Series variants, and future electrification design expressions.”

The latest concept offers two experiences: Opulent and Velocity.

With Opulent, drivers would experience level 4 autonomy with a "hands-free immersive experience," according to Cadillac. The drive-free experience is accompanied by multi-sensory modes that promote rest. The modes are accessed through a full widescreen display and an augmented reality head-up display.

A controller enables the driver to switch from the autonomous mode to Velocity, allowing the hidden steering wheel and pedals to present themselves. With Velocity, drivers get a thrill that's inspired by Cadillac's Blackwing high-performance engineering.

On the outside, Opulent Velocity has what Cadillac calls a "dramatic draped surface," tucked front fascia and butterfly doors.

Inside there's a 3D widescreen display, a digital cockpit, racing-inspired Y-shape steering wheel and voice command user experiences.

The interior of the new Cadillac Opulent Velocity concept EV features a racing-inspired Y-shape steering wheel, voice command user experiences and an intuitive infotainment system.

“Opulent Velocity is inspired by the dynamic design cues of motorsports in a 2+2 aerodynamic body form,” said Magalie Debellis, manager of Cadillac advanced design. “It conceptualizes a holistic consideration of all elements and senses, showcasing a perfect marriage of hypercar personality with luxury execution and revered opulence. It’s a signal to the world that Cadillac intends to lead in electrified luxury performance.”
