New Moon's Casual Read of New Year Omens

Holiday Mathis on

On this eve of the eve of the new year, there is no need to hop to judgment, assumption or worry over unfolding events. The new moon in Capricorn, the sign of Father Time, reminds us that there is no way to tell good luck from bad luck in the moment it happens. Over time, a lottery win can be a curse, and other momentary losses can ultimately bring about our life's most shining treasure.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). They say the truth doesn't blush. Your cheeks redden to reveal a gap between the reality and what you want to reveal about it. Keep in mind that not everyone needs to or deserves to know your inner world, and that's OK, too.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). The beauty of love lies not in the memories it gives us but in the moments you continue to build together. Enduring relationships will not rely on yesterday's successes, rather they will keep reinventing themselves.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). When considering relationships and compatibility, personality and shared values are often the focus, but today you'll notice how practicalities are just as crucial. There's luck for sorting logistics.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). You may think you don't need to hear certain words of affirmation and validation, but your emotions will tell you otherwise. The slightest acknowledgement from a dear one can open up a floodgate of emotion, reminding you how words matter.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). When people are in your territory, you can't totally get down to the business of your own agenda. Even if that agenda is to relax, you ideally will get to do it your own way. Claim your space.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). The rule of thumb is if it's taking forever to get "there," it's very possible there is no "there" to get to, only a "here" to resolve. Wrap up what you can and trust that life will bring something new into the settled territory.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You'll be reminded how true intimacy is built on the foundation of communication, one sentence at a time. Today's clear communication between two people will contribute to a growing bond. Those who communicate well will also love well.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Thinking there is only one right answer, one soulmate or one perfect way of living life will put undue pressure on a situation. Be open to the thousands upon thousands of beautiful options and your life will sing.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Time is an arrow, and boy, do you feel it as such today. When one thing ends, you're right into another in a long, continuous arc. In a sense, whether you hit the target or not, you win because you finally get a break.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Shiny prizes are nice, but the real riches are good relationships, cultivated with care. You'll reap the benefit of your habitual pattern of thoughtfulness, attentiveness and tenderness.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Agreement isn't necessarily understanding. Just because people nod along doesn't mean true communication is happening. Look for signs of careful listening, which will include the give-and-take of ideas and excellent questions, too.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). The most difficult thing to prize is the thing you already have. And if that "thing" happens to be a good relationship or that elusive entity known as true love, it's a dangerous "thing" to overlook indeed. Prioritize correctly and everything else will fall into place.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Dec. 30). In a paradox of popularity, you'll be more self-sufficient than ever, and yet everyone wants to join you, help you and contribute to you. More highlights: You'll pour hundreds of hours into a project that often brings you joy. And when it doesn't, you'll take heart and keep working until joy comes around again. Your dedication will eventually be acknowledged and rewarded. Virgo and Libra adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 10, 2, 18, 8 and 37.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: In an act of astrological auspiciousness, the ethereal pop star Ellie Goulding is set to perform in the approximate glow of her own solar return at "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve." Born when the sun, moon, Mercury and Neptune were all in Capricorn, Goulding is a multifaceted artist whose efforts extend beyond music, advocating for sustainability and creating art that resonates deeply with her fans worldwide.
