A Laborious New Moon

Holiday Mathis on

For many, Labor Day is typically a day to remove oneself from labor to ponder its role in our lives, and this year's new moon in Virgo supports the agenda. With the sun and moon in the sign of industriousness, we consider our feelings about the sort of work we do in the world and the returns of that energetic investment, especially in terms of life spent on the clock.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). If it's within your ability, you'll nail it. If not, you'll learn so that you can get it right another time. Either way, your effectiveness has nothing to do with you personally. It's more about how much practice and experience you have in the endeavor.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). There is no clear winner here, and neither is there a solid sense of right and wrong. The lines are blurred. Perspectives vary widely, making it difficult to determine a definitive outcome.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Boredom will be the predecessor to excellent and purposeful work. It's like hot oil to popcorn kernels. Enough time in the agitated, anticipatory state will bring about an explosion of delicious ideas.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). You don't have to prove yourself to anyone, not even you, but you challenge yourself anyway. Without a challenge, there's no satisfaction. When you take on the challenge, you give yourself more to savor about life, so it's always worth it.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Feelings can be hard to put into words even on the best of days, but it's trickier today because there's more at stake. You have the power to uplift or hurt, to illuminate the hard truth, soften it or ignore it to help someone save face. You'll lead with compassion.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Most crimes are mistakes, but most mistakes are not crimes. Small infractions are part of the learning process and offer opportunities for growth. Focus on the larger picture and the positive change that comes from these experiences.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). For certain people, anger is an addiction. The chemical components of anger have them seeking and attracting the circumstances that will facilitate the angry rush and subsequent release. Avoid these people altogether today.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). To focus on what matters, you must ignore what doesn't matter, and much will fall into the category today. Give yourself credit for saying "no" because it's a power move that will make the rest of the power moves possible.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). In today's situation, each side will have valid points and grievances, and the complexity of the issue defies simple solutions. This ambiguity will challenge your understanding and call for a deeper reflection on the nuances involved.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You're building stamina, but are you going anywhere? The endeavor at hand is like a stair stepper at the gym. New steps appear continuously before you, yet your elevation barely changes. You're the only one who can determine if it's worth the work.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Your stock goes up because you answer all communication promptly. Good connections start with being easy to get a hold of. Accessibility will give you an advantage. People trust you. Your reputation for solidity makes people want you on their side.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). The word "amateur" means "lover" in French. Those special things you do just for the love of it will bring you much joy now. As these endeavors veer into the professional realm, things get even more interesting.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Sept. 2). Beauty knows no bounds, and you often dip into a state of wonder this year, finding spectacular grounding in your surroundings. The challenges that open your mind, heart and options inspire a wave of creativity. More highlights: Work that makes you the center of action and attention, friends and discounted goods and excursions. Gemini and Libra adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 3, 33, 1, 19 and 28.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: Salma Hayek began her career in telenovelas before paving her own way to Hollywood by producing in her breakout role as the iconic artist Frida Kahlo in the biographical film "Frida." Known for her beauty, charisma and versatility, Hayek is also recognized for her activism and philanthropy, advocating for women's rights, immigration issues and more. With luminaries in Virgo, Hayek is a poster girl for Virgoean beauty -- a loveliness that radiates from a place of grounding, intelligence, hard work and healthy choices.
