White to Play and Mate Without Moving the White King

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This problem was dug out of an old Illustrated London News. The 1840s crowd solved it. How about you? There are no tricks, like promotion...just really well planned rook and pawn moves that force the mate! The trick of it is to imagine the final mating position, which, really, is the key to most mating attacks.

Solution:

1.Rg6 Kh7 2.h6 Kh8 3.Re6 Kg8 4.Rf6 Kh8 5.Rf8+ Kh7 6.Re8 Kxh6 7.Re7 Kh5 8.Rh7# Other king moves just made it easier. A pleasing study by Herr Kling in 1845.
