White to Play and Mate

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

The brilliant Peter Leko finishes off a great attacking grandmaster, Teimour Radjabov, in a series of stunning moves. Despite all the razzle dazzle of the knight, queen and rook, that lowly pawn on h6 plays a key role in the mating attack.

Solution

1.Nf6! (threatening 2.Rxh7 mate) Rxf6 [1...Rb7 2.Qxb7 Qxb7 3.Rxb7 Rxf6 4.Rb8+ Rf8 5.Rxf8#] 2.Rd8+ Rf8 3.Qd4+ Qxd4 [3...Re5 4.Qxe5+ Kg8 5.Qg7#] 4.Rxf8# The queen check is just so delightful ... Black is helpless.
