White to Play and Mate with Conditions

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This is an old problem that I give to my young students to help the learn about the long range power of the queen and also to give them some experience in forcing an opponent to make a move to a certain square. It's a pretty good mental gymnastic for adults as well.

Here's the task: mate the Black king in seven moves without taking those three queens off the first rank. That's right. They can only move to a1, b1, c1, d1, e1, f1, g1, h1 and they've got to mate that king. Your best bet is to get that Black king closer...

Solution:

1.Qe1 Ka7 2.Qh1 Ka6 3.Qhg1 Ka5 4.Qgf1 Ka4 5.Qce1 Ka3 6.Qa1+ Kb3 7.Qeb1# This clever concoction was devised by F.S. Ensor
