Black to Play and Mate
Published in Chess Puzzles
Our thanks to the veterans and active duty service men and women on this Veterans' Day. My chess federation here in NJ has sent hundreds of chess sets overseas and to bases here in the US. Chess is a useful pastime to take your mind off your duties as a soldier. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the fallen victims of terrorism this week at Ft. Hood, my last duty station decades ago.
Solution:
1...Qxg2+ 2.Kxg2 Rg6+ 3.Kh1 [3.Kf3 Nd2#] 3...Nxf2# The discovered double check in both lines is devastating. If you think about it, this theme of the attack on g2 has similarities to the previous day's problem. That's why it's good to learn these types of mating patterns.
