White to Play

Although we give a lot of mating attacks, there has to be the realization that most games are won by winning material and then grinding out the win until one’s opponent gives in. Today’s game features Sammy Reshevsky finding a way to win material against Svetozar Gligoric and then use his great technical skills to win the game.

Once you play the solution over, you should notice that the bishop on h2 is the crucial piece in Reshevsky’s plan. Although there are three pieces between the bishop and the black king, Reshevsky sees the possibilities in this. 1.Nb5 cxb5 1...Qe7 2.Nxd6 Rxd6 3.Nxe6 Nxe6 4.Bxd6+ wins the exchange 2.Qxc7+ Bxc7 3.Rxc7 Kxc7 4.Nxe6+ Kd7 5.Nxd8 Rxd8 6.Bxb5+ and he’s won a pawn. To him that means the game.
