White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

A magnificent display of how two bishops can cooperate! Yes, White can draw this against the two passed pawns and king.

Solution:

The genius who came up with this was Semisashenov. The irony is that if Black doesn’t take the bishop on the last move, then Black gets mated! 1.Bg1 a2 [1...Kxb1 2.Bd4 a2 3.Bxb2 a1=Q 4.Bxa1 Kxa1 stalemate]2.Bh7 b1=Q 3.Bd4+ Qb2 4.Bh8 Qxh8 stalemate
